Does softened water taste salty?

Softening systems that soften the water through ion exchange must be regularly filled with salt. Therefore, one might think that softened water must taste salty using this process.
Softening systems do not leave any salt in the drinking water
The salt is used to regenerate a softening system. After a certain amount of water, the system's pressure tank is automatically flushed with brine. Only the sodium ions are “removed” from the salt solution (sodium chloride / NaCl) and remain in the pressure tank, the actual reaction container, which is filled with a special exchange resin. During softening, these ions are exchanged with the lime-forming calcium and magnesium ions. All unwanted substances are flushed directly into the wastewater. The water therefore does not taste salty.
What if it tastes salty?
Due to certain circumstances, such as an incorrectly set softening system or a power outage at the wrong time, the water can taste salty. If you notice a distinct taste of salt, please contact our customer service. However, these are absolute exceptions.
Another reason could be that your municipality doses chlorine into drinking water. This can happen if there is contamination. In this case, the sodium ions combine with the chloride ions to form table salt. The water then tastes salty. This chlorination is usually only carried out for a limited period of time.
