Physical water softening with magnets or electricity?

The question of whether water softening can be achieved using physical processes such as magnetism or electricity comes up again and again. There are some manufacturers of such devices who swear by their effectiveness. But what's really going on?
How does “softening” work with magnets or electricity?
With the help of a magnet, the calcium and magnesium ions should be influenced in a certain way so that the lime no longer falls out. However, the water hardness remains unchanged, which is why one cannot speak of water softening. In our opinion, softening water with the help of magnets or electric current is not possible, at least this has not yet been proven.
For devices that do not change the water hardness, it is actually forbidden to talk about water softening. Ion exchange is still detectable and cost-effective in the home. In addition, the low salt consumption during ion exchange is certainly more environmentally friendly than the power consumption of some electrical devices.
