Does a softening system have to be certified?

We are often asked whether our softening systems have certification. We can answer this answer in the negative. Certification is not required by law and is therefore not mandatory. It is crucial that the systems are built according to the recognized rules of technology, which we of course guarantee.

There are many, sometimes very different, opinions on the subject of certification. There are forums and posts on this topic, especially on the Internet, that differ greatly from what they say in terms of content. We would like to clarify this topic objectively and with relevant legal texts at this point.

Certification is not legally required for water softening systems

Drinking water in Germany is usually of excellent quality and this quality should of course not be impaired by a water treatment system. That's why Germany has the Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV), which sets, for example, limit values for a wide variety of substances that may be in the water.

In addition, Section 17 of the TrinkwV , for example, regulates what must be taken into account when treating water. This is intended to prevent water treatment from endangering human health or, for example, changing the taste or smell of the water (paragraphs 1 to 3). On the subject of certification, paragraph 5 states:

"It is presumed that products and processes meet the requirements of paragraphs 1 to 3 if this has been confirmed by a certificate from a certifier accredited for the drinking water sector."

Compliance with legal requirements is mandatory

Compliance with the relevant guidelines is therefore crucial. This can be confirmed by a certificate. In principle, certification is to be understood as a (not free) service that helps the manufacturer comply with the guidelines and assumes liability for any non-compliance. We as manufacturers have decided to take care of this ourselves and provide our products with the CE mark. The CE marking is a manufacturer's self-responsible declaration to market surveillance and consumers that its products are compliant with all European directives applicable to the products.
