How does drinking water disinfection work with ultraviolet light?
UV light is a natural component of sunlight. The wavelength of 254 nm has a particularly high energy and therefore the unique ability to kill microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc.) in water and air. Radiation with UV light stops the reproduction of these organisms, which can cause infections and diseases.
UV light is "simply" just light energy that breaks down the DNA of dangerous microorganisms. This is the difference to chemical disinfection methods, which rely on oxidation to destroy the microorganisms' livelihoods. When the DNA of microorganisms decomposes, all important life functions are destroyed and the microorganism dies. Since no chemicals are used in UV disinfection, no dangerous residues or by-products can get into your drinking water.
