Why do you need a home water filter?

Nowadays, house water filters are installed in almost all new buildings in Germany. The filters are usually located immediately after the water meter. This type of filter is usually a mechanical filter. This means that all particles above a certain size get stuck in the filter mesh. This can be, for example, sand, stones or similar particles. In tap water, such particles can get into the water, for example due to construction work on the pipes.

What does backwash filter or backwash filter mean?

Domestic water filters are often backwashable filters. This means it is possible to flush the filter back against the “normal” flow direction. The previously collected dirt is removed again and flushed into the wastewater or a collecting container. Some models can be expanded to include an automatic backwash system. With an automatic system, the filter is automatically backwashed at regular intervals.

Cartridge filters are rather impractical in the household

Occasionally, filters with replaceable cartridges are installed instead of a backwash filter. In contrast to a backwashable filter, cartridges have to be changed regularly. In addition to the follow-up costs incurred for the filter cartridges, there is a risk of pressure loss with these filters if the cartridges are not changed. Cartridge filters are more commonly used for well water or in industry, as a finer filter strength is required.
