Regeneration

Why do we talk about regeneration when it comes to ion exchangers? When water is treated through ion exchange, undesirable substances are replaced by harmless substances using a special exchange resin. However, the exchanger resin only has a limited “capacity”: Similar to a battery, the resin must be recharged, i.e. regenerated, after a certain amount of water. During this process, the resin is usually rinsed with salt brine. The previously removed substances are flushed into the wastewater and the original capacity of the resin is restored.
