How does rust form in water?
- Rust is responsible for the brown water. In most cases, the discoloration comes from minerals such as iron and manganese. These are dissolved in the water and thus settle in the pipes (old or galvanized pipes) on the inner walls.
- The brown discoloration can occur briefly, for example, due to maintenance work on the pipe network. Shouldn't last long though.
- If you let the “brown water” run for a while, it should turn clear again.
Is rusty water dangerous?
- As soon as the water has turned clear again, you can use it without any concerns.
- However, if the “brown water” occurs after a short period of non-use, you should replace the pipes or treat the water.
- Permanent rust formation can cause water pipes to leak.
- In addition to rust formation, other contaminants can also form in the water pipes that can endanger your health.
