How loud is a softening system during regeneration?

A softening system is usually installed in the basement. As a rule, the flushing noises cannot be heard in the house. However, nowadays there are many houses without basements and therefore how loud a softening system actually is plays a big role.

No additional noise during normal operation

Basically, a softening system does not produce any additional noise during normal operation. This means that all you hear is the sound of the water flowing in the pipes. The softening system makes this noise neither noticeably louder nor noticeably quieter.

Noise development during regeneration

This looks different during regeneration. In the case of the single-column basic systems, this usually takes place at night (can of course be reprogrammed). With double-column duplex systems, regeneration does not take place at any specific time or day. During regeneration (approx. 1 hour), the system goes through various flushing cycles. This can cause brief hissing noises.

A measurement directly at the valve showed that a volume development of up to 80 dB can occur. This roughly corresponds to the noise level of a washing machine when spinning (see video).

Conclusion

A softening system only produces noise during regeneration, but not during normal operation. Regeneration only takes place about every 3 days and only takes about an hour. The volume is comparable to the volume of a washing machine.
