Does a water softener have to be certified?

We are often asked whether our water softening systems are certified. We can answer this question in the negative. Certification is not required by law and is therefore not mandatory. The decisive factor is that the systems are built according to the recognized rules of technology, which we of course guarantee.
There are many, and sometimes very different, opinions on the subject of certification. There are forums and posts on the subject, particularly on the Internet, that differ greatly from the content of the statement. We would like to clarify this subject objectively and with the relevant legal texts at this point.
Certification is not required by law for water softening systems
Drinking water in Germany is usually of excellent quality and this quality should of course not be impaired by a water treatment plant. This is why Germany has the Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV), which sets limits for various substances that may be present in water.
In addition, Section 17 of the Drinking Water Ordinance , for example, regulates what must be observed when treating water. This is intended to prevent water treatment from endangering human health or, for example, changing the taste or smell of the water (paragraphs 1 to 3). Paragraph 5 states the following on the subject of certification:
"Products and processes are presumed to meet the requirements of paragraphs 1 to 3 if this has been confirmed by a certificate issued by a certifier accredited for the drinking water sector."
Compliance with legal requirements is mandatory
Compliance with the relevant guidelines is therefore crucial. This can be confirmed by a certificate. Certification is essentially a (not free) service that helps the manufacturer comply with the guidelines and assumes liability for any non-compliance. As manufacturers, we have decided to take care of this ourselves and to label our products with the CE mark. The CE mark is a manufacturer's own declaration to market supervision and consumers that its products conform to all European guidelines applicable to the products.
