Activated carbon filters are filters that contain activated carbon. They can be used to filter both gases and liquids.

Why is it called activated charcoal?

Activated carbon is known by many names, for example A-carbon, carbon filter, medicinal charcoal, etc. The carbon itself is combustible and consists mostly of carbon with a highly porous structure.

What are the areas of application for activated carbon filters?

Activated carbon filters have various applications, for example in respiratory masks, extractor hoods, aquariums, the automotive industry, etc.
Naturally, this also applies to water technology, more precisely to technical water treatment.

These filters are primarily used in private water treatment systems for taste neutralization. Due to their high adsorption capacity, dissolved substances such as chlorine or sulfur compounds (hydrogen sulfide), which can cause unpleasant odors (like a rotten egg smell), can be removed.
Activated carbon filter systems are used in drinking water treatment, process water treatment, and wastewater treatment. However, we will not discuss industrial applications here.

What types of designs are these filters available in?

Activated carbon filters are available in powder and block form.

GAC filters (powder form) have a higher flow rate, but must always be operated with a sediment post-filter.

How often should a carbon filter be changed?

Since activated carbon filters accumulate adsorbed substances, it is essential to strictly adhere to the recommended replacement intervals, as oversaturation of the carbon will cause the substances to be released back into the water. This achieves the opposite of the intended effect.
Since activated carbon also stores bacteria, a filter that is not changed in time can become a veritable breeding ground for bacteria.

The replacement intervals for water treatment in private households are between 6 and a maximum of 12 months. Operators of small reverse osmosis systems should definitely take this into account.
