Yttrium
Yttrium is a rare metal that occurs in small amounts in the environment, especially in geological formations. It can enter drinking water sources, primarily through natural deposits or industrial processes that release yttrium compounds. Although yttrium does not pose an immediate health threat in low concentrations, high concentrations can be problematic because it can exhibit toxic properties.
Specialized filter technologies are used to remove yttrium from water. Reverse osmosis systems are particularly effective because their semi-permeable membranes can filter out almost all dissolved metals and minerals, including yttrium. Ion exchangers can also be used in certain cases to bind metal ions such as yttrium and remove them from the water. In many cases, these technologies are combined to ensure thorough purification of the water.
